Speed and Velocity

QuestionAnswer
Define speed Distance over time (how far something travels over a period of time)
How is velocity different than speed? It contains a direction (north, south, east, west, upwards, etc.)
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: A runner completes a 100 meter dash in 10 seconds. What is their average speed? s=d/t 10 m/s
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: A train travels at a constant speed of 80 km/h for 3 hours. What total distance does the train cover? s=d/t 240 km
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: If a cyclist maintains a constant speed of 12 m/s, how long will it take them to travel 60 meters? s=d/t 5 s
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: A car travels a distance of 150 km in 2.5 hours. What is the average speed of the car in km/h? s=d/t 60 km/hr
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: A peregrine falcon dives at a constant speed of 90 m/s. How far does it travel in 4 seconds? s=d/t 360 m
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: A boat travels 45 km at a constant speed of 15 km/h. If it departs at 9:00 AM, what time does it arrive at its destination? s=d/t 12:00 pm (noon)
You will need to calculate speed when given a formula. Here is an example: Two cars start from the same point at the same time and travel east. Car A travels at 60 km/h and Car B travels at 80 km/h. How far apart are the two cars after 2.5 hours? s=d/t 50 km
When an object changes direction is it changing speed or velocity? Velocity

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
