6th grade Plate Tectonics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who was the scientist to come up with the Continental Drift theory? | Alfred Wegener |
| What is Continental Drift theory? | An idea that said all the continents used to be together and have drifted apart over the years. |
| Pangaea | The single landmass that broke apart about 250 million years ago to make the continents we have now. |
| Fossil | Any trace of an ancient organism that has been preserved in rock. |
| What evidence is there to support Pangaea? | Fossils of the same animals and plants were found on different continents, way across the ocean. |
| Sea-floor spreading | The way new ocean floor is made. |
| Mid-ocean ridge | An underwater mountain range where molten material will erupt from the mantle. |
| Parallel magnetic stripes | Different types of rock that changes every 10-50 km on either side of the mid-ocean ridge that helps prove sea-floor spreading. |
| Tectonic Plates | The different broken up parts of the lithosphere. |
| Oceanic crust | A type of tectonic plate under ocean. |
| Continental crust | a type of tectonic plate under land. |
| Convection Currents | The process in which magma heats up and rises then cools down and sinks, over and over again. |
| Subduction | The process by which oceanic crust sinks into deep-sea trenches after colliding into other crust.. |
| Lithosphere | Uppermost part of the mantle together with the crust. |
