Forces&Energy Vocab

TermDefinition
Energy The ability to do work or cause a change.
Kinetic Energy The energy an object possesses due to its motion.
Potential Energy The stored energy an object has due to its position or condition.
Mechanical Energy The total energy of an object due to its motion and interactions.
Total Energy The sum of all the different forms of energy. It includes kinetic, potential, thermal, and other types of energy.
Gravitational Potential Energy Energy stored between an object and Earth due to gravity.
Chemical Potential Energy Energy stored and waiting to be used in the bonds between atoms.
Elastic Potential Energy Energy stored when an object is compressed or stretched.
Radiant Energy Energy that travels in waves and can move through empty space.
Sound Energy Energy carried by sound waves.
Thermal Energy Energy that comes from the temperature of matter.
Heat The transfer of thermal energy from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature.
Electric Energy The energy carried by an electric current.
Power Plant A facility where energy is generated. This facility converts various forms of energy into electric energy.
Law of Conservation of Energy The principle that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed or transferred.
Energy Transformation The process of converting one form of energy into another.
Energy Transfer The movement of energy from one object, place, or system to another.
Useful Energy The energy that can be harnessed and put to work. It is the energy that performs the desired task.
Waste Energy Energy that is not useful and is released as thermal energy. It often occurs due to inefficiencies in energy conversion processes.
Work The transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object move in the direction of the force. It is measured in joules.
Force A push or pull that can cause an object to move, stop, or change direction.
Joule The unit used to measure energy and work.
Friction A force that resists the motion of objects or surfaces in contact.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Speed How fast an object moves. It tells you the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time.
Fossil Fuels Fuels formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals.
