Geography Terms 1

TermDefinition
Archipelago A group or chain of islands.
Climate The weather pattern over a long period of time; affected by latitude, elevation, and wind.
Compass Rose A pointer for cardinal directions, North, South, East, West.
Delta A triangle shaped area of land at the mouth of a river.
Desert Very dry, barren land without trees.
Distribution Map Shows the pattern of something spread over an area.
Elevation Altitude, higher than sea level.
Equator Imaginary line of latitude; parallel that divides Earth into the North and South Hemisphere
Geography Relationship between physical features, climate, and people.
Hemisphere 1/2 of a sphere; Northern and Southern separated by the Equator; Eastern and Western separated by the Prime Meridian.
Map Key Legend; explains symbols on a map.
Latitude Measures distance North and South of the Equator; expressed in degrees. (East to West).
Longitude Measures distance East and West of the Prime Meridian; expressed in degrees. (North to South).
Meridians Lines of longitude.
Non-Renewable Natural Resources Resources which cannot easily be replaced or never be replaced once used.
Physical Map Shows landforms and bodies of water.
Polar zones Highest latitudes north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle.
Political Map Shows borders of countries/states/provinces within a continent or country.
Prime Meridian Line of longitude; divides Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Renewable Natural Resources Resources that can be used again and again.
Scale Allows an estimate of real differences on Earth.
Temperate Zones Middle latitudes; hot summers and cold winters; between 23.5° and 66.5° latitudes.
Tropical Zones Between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn; in the low latitudes; hot most of the year.
Weather Atmospheric condition which is seen in the environment over a short period of time.
