Wave Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Longitudinal Wave | A wave where the medium and energy move parallel (along the same line) |
| Transverse Wave | A wave where the medium and energy move perpendicular (different directions) |
| Mechanical Wave | A wave that requires a medium to travel |
| Electromagnetic Wave | A wave that does NOT require a medium to travel. Can move through a VACUUM like outer space |
| X-ray, visible light, radio wave, gamma ray | Examples of electromagnetic waves |
| Sound wave, ocean wave, seismic wave | Examples of mechanical waves |
| Medium | The material a wave travels through |
| Reflection | A wave BOUNCES off a surface |
| Refraction | A wave BENDS because it enters a NEW MEDIUM |
| Diffraction | A wave bends around a BARRIER and SPREADS OUT |
| Constructive Interference | Waves COMBINE to make a larger wave |
| Destructive Interference | Waves CANCEL OUT to make a smaller wave |
| Echo | The reflection of a sound wave |
| Frequency | The number of waves in a period of time. Measured in Hertz (Hz). |
| Wavelength | The length of a wave |
| Amplitude | The height of a wave |
| Pitch | The same as the frequency of a sound wave |
| Loudness | The same as the amplitude of a sound wave. |
