| American Pharmacists Association (APhA) | Oldest pharmacy association; founded in 1852. |
| American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) | Pharmacy association founded in 1942. |
| American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Model Curriculum for Pharmacy Technician Education and Training | Program outlining how to meet ASHP goals for pharmacy technician training curricula. |
| Board of Pharmacy (BOP) | State-managed agency that licenses pharmacists and may register or license pharmacy technicians to work in pharmacy. |
| Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) | A technician who has passed the national certification examination; the technician can use the abbreviation CPhT after his or her name. |
| Closed-Door Pharmacy | Pharmacy that fills medications for institutions long-term care and is not open to the public. |
| Communication | Ability to clearly express information so it is understood by patients and healthcare professionals. |
| Community Pharmacy | Retail/outpatient pharmacy serving walk-in patients for prescriptions and OTC medications. |
| Competency | Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks accurately and safely. |
| Confidentiality | Protection of patient information from unauthorized access or disclosure, in accordance with HIPAA. |
| Continuing Education (CE) | Ongoing professional education required to maintain certification or licensure. |
| Hyperalimentation | Parenteral (intravenous) nutrition for patients who are unable to eat solids of liquids; also known as total parenteral nutrition (TPN). |
| Inpatient Pharmacy | Pharmacy located within a hospital or institutional facility serving admitted patients. |
| Outpatient Pharmacy | Pharmacy serving patients who are not hospitalized; often part of clinics or medical centers. |
| Parenteral Medications | Medications administered by injection (IV, IM, or subcutaneous), bypassing the digestive tract. |
| Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) | National organization that administers the CPhT certification exam and sets certification standards. |
| National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) | Organization representing state boards of pharmacy; develops national pharmacy standards and programs. |
| National Healthcareer Association (NHA) | Certification organization offering the ExCPT exam for pharmacy technicians. |
| Professionalism | Conduct that reflects ethical behavior, responsibility, respect, and adherence to workplace standards. |
| Society for the Education of Pharmacy Technicians (SEPhT) | Organization supporting pharmacy technician educators, students, and professional development. |
| Licensure | State authorization permitting an individual to practice as a pharmacy technician. |
| Registration | Process of being listed with the state board of pharmacy as a technician or technician trainee. |
| Certification | Verification that a technician has met national competency standards through examination. |
| Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) | Large-volume intravenous nutrition administered through the central vein (subclavian vein), which allows for a higher concentration of solutions. |
| Nondiscretionary duties | Tasks a pharmacy technician performs that do NOT require professional judgment. They are routine, clearly defined, and must be done exactly according to policy, law, or procedure. |
| National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) | Pharmacy association primarily for technicians; founded in 1999. |
