Review: Literary Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Allusion A reference to something or someone well-known that came before the current text.
Conflict The problem the character/speaker is up against. (There is always more than one.) Ex: Character vs. character, self, nature, fate, society, etc.
Foreshadowing Giving hints or clues that suggest or prepare for events that happen later in a text.
Hubris The Greek word for pride or insolence. Usually the defect of the character that leads the tragic hero/character to ignore all warnings of disaster.
Irony A twisting or flipping of expectations. Impact: Allows for humor/snark and tension (dramatic irony); also a deep method of pathos. Can be verbal (in words) or situational (in action)
Juxtaposition Placing two items beside one another for contrasting effects; can be characters or places. Impact: reveals more about a character when confronted by a different character or place
Metaphor A pattern equating two seemingly unlike objects. Impact: Reveals and attaches denotation and connotation of the comparisons (ex - a sheep among wolves gives a visceral note of innocence and danger)
Pun A form of wit, not necessarily funny, involving a play on words with two or more meanings.
Personification Giving human traits to nonhuman or abstract things Impact: develops theme and mood
Simile A figure of speech in which two things are compared using “like” or “as” to draw attention to similarities about two things that are seemingly dissimilar.
Symbolism Anything that signifies or stands for something else.
Theme The central message in a text. (The complexity a text is communicating about a theme topic.)
