Mixtures & Solutions

TermDefinition
Matter substance that occupies space, has mass, and is composed of microscopic particles
Substance a particular kind of matter with uniform properties; can be seen, touched, or measured
Physical properties observable characteristics of matter that can be used to identify particular materials
Physical change a change to a substance without creating a new substance
Mixture a sample of matter consisting of two or more substances in varying proportions; substances in a mixture retain (keep) their physical properties
Solution a substance in which a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance is evenly distributed (or dissolved) within a liquid or sometimes a gas or solid
Conservation of matter substance remains even though state or particle size may change
Dissolve To spread out evenly in a liquid
Sieve a tool that is used to separate particles of different sizes (AKA strainer, screen, colander)
