EAP Mod 1 Vocabulary

Experimental Analysis of Behavior Module 1 Vocabulary and Definitions

TermDefinition
Respondent Conditioning involuntary response, NS paired with unconditioned stimulus produces unconditioned response and as pairings continue the formerly NS acquires eliciting properties of the UR-eventually US becomes a conditioned stimulus that can elicit CR like the UR
Unconditioned Stimulus (US) something, rather a stimulus, in the immediate environment that elicits a response without any prior learning or associated conditioning
Unconditioned Response (UR) an automatic behavioral response that occurs following some US stimulus/antecedent that happens without any prior learning or associated conditioning
Conditioned Stimulus (CS) a stimulus having otherwise been neutral in the immediate environment that once paired with an unconditioned stimulus, becomes a learned stimulus for responding
Conditioned Response (CR) behavioral response that becomes learned through ongoing pairing of a previously NS with and an US
Neutral Stimulus (NS) stimulus that does not automatically produce a response or target behavior and does not innately have the ability to evoke the response of interest
Extinction (Respondent) during respondent conditioning when pairing between CS and US ceases and the CR weakens, becomes suppressed
Spontaneous Recovery following extinction, the conditioned response emerges when the CS presents again
Generalization (Respondent) when a CR results from both the first CS and another closely related stimulus
Discrimination (Respondent) when the learned response to a CS applies only to that particular CS and responding does not occur with other stimuli, even if it's similar to the CS
Trace Conditioning time-based condition wherein NS is presented then removed prior to presentation of US
Delay Conditioning most effective time-based respondent conditioning wherein NS presents prior to US
Simultaneous Conditioning less effective time-based respondent conditioning wherein NS and US are presented at the same time
Backward Conditioning the least effective time-based respondent conditioning wherein the unconditioned stimulus is presented before neutral stimulus
Conditioned Suppression when a CS decreases respondent behavior if that CS predicts an unwanted consequence
Rescorla-Wagner Model predictive and quantitative-based learning model that posits that learning depends on the US' magnitude of spontaneity, that stronger conditioning occurs when the US is unexpected, and that learning ceases if the CS can fully predict the US
Overshadowing when two CS are presented together, the most salient CS of the two is more readily conditioned and learned while the less salient CS is ignored, may interfere with learning
Blocking within learning repertoire, a previously associated CS with a US effectively limiting the ability to learn another CS, may interfere with learning
Operant Conditioning Chamber most widely used learning tool, experimentally controlled and isolated environment in EAB that controls the environmental variability by determining importance of factors in the environment. It's a mechanism for precise control of consequence delivery.
Cumulative Recorder vital automatic data collection system tool/equipment with a pen affixed to a paper roller that marks when responding/reinforcement delivery occurs, ultimately creating a visual representation that relays real-time responding patterns

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
