Medical Terminology
| Term | Definition |

| suffix | A word element placed at the end of a word root that changes the meaning of the word. In medical terminology, a suffix usually indicates a procedure, condition, disease, or part of speech. |
| prefix | A word element attached to the beginning of a word or word root. The prefix ususally indicates a number, time, position, direction, or negation. |
| combining form | A word root to which a vowel, (usually an o) is added. The vowel has no meaning of its own, but enables two elements to be connected. |
| Rule #1 for defining medical words | Define the suffix, or last part of the word. |
| Rule #2 for defining medical words | Define the first part of the word (which may be a word root, cominbining form, or prefix). |
| Rule #3 for defining medical words | Define the middle parts of the word. |
| Rule #1 for building medical words | A word root links a suffix that begins with a vowel. |
| Rule #2 for building medical words | A combining form (root + o) links a suffix that begins with a consonant. |
| Rule #3 for building medical words | Use a combining form to link a root to another root to form a compound word. This rule holds true even if the next root begins with a vowel, as in osteroarthritis. |
