| What are the most common drugs are used for treating Parkinson's Disease? | Levodopa or if the treatment of Levodopa alone isn't improving condions, a combination of Levodopa and Carbidopa (also called Sinamet) |
| What are some of the adverse effects of Levodopa? | Nausea and vomiting, dyskinesias, cardiovascular effects, psychosis, darkens sweat and urin, and can activate malignant melanoma. |
| What foods can interact with Levodopa? | High protein meals should be avoided because neutral amino acids will compete with levodopa for absorption in the small intestine and the blood-brain barrier. Make sure to inform your patient to avoid high-protien meals. |
| What are the advantages of adding Carbidopa to your Levodopa treatments? | It has no adverse effects of its own, but it increases the availability of levodopa in the CNS. The effects of the combo drug come mainly from the Levodopa. |
| Levodopa is contradicted for which patients? | Those with malignant melonoma - it can activate this neoplasm, and for those taking MAO inhibitors (can cause severe hypertension if on both). Use caution for administering this drug for patients with cardiac disease and psychiatric disorders. |
| What group of drugs are used to treat Alzheimer's disease? | Cholinesterace Inhibitors including Donepezil (Aricept), Galantamine, Rivastigmine, and Tacrine. |
| Which cholinesterace inhibitor is avoided and why? | Tacrine. It can cause liver damage. |
| Which cholinesterace inhibitor is used for both mild and severe forms of Alzheimer's? | Donepezil (Aricept). All others are for patient's with mild to moderate symptoms only. |
| What is the mechanism of action of cholinesterace inhibitors? | They prevent the breakdown of ACh making it more availiby for patients. This results in enhanced transmission of neurons. Cholinesterace inhibitors are NOT a cure for AD. |
| What are some of the adverse effects of cholinesterace inhibitors? | Typical side effects include nausea, vomiting, dyepepsia, diarrhea, dizziness, & headaches. Bronchoconstriction can occur so use cautiously for patients with COPD or asthma. |
| How should dosages of cholinesterace inhibitors be admistered? | Start with low dosages and then slowly progress to higher dosages - side effects are most prevelant in the beginning of treatment and with higher dosages. |
