TermDefinition
Environmental Science The study of how living things interact with each other and with their environment
Population A group of individuals of the same species living in the same area
Developing Country A country with a growing economy and improving living conditions that may still have limited resources
Sustainability Using resources in a way that meets our needs today without preventing future generations from meeting their needs
Hunter-Gatherer A person who gets food by hunting animals and gathering wild plants
Urbanization The growth of cities as more people move from rural areas to urban areas
Agricultural Revolution The period when humans began farming and domesticating animals instead of relying mainly on hunting and gathering
Tragedy of the Commons The overuse of a shared resource when individuals act in their own interest
Industrial Revolution A period when machines and factories greatly increased the production of goods
Developed Country A country with a strong economy and high levels of technology infrastructure and living standards
Biodiversity The variety of living things found in an ecosystem or on Earth
Ecological Footprint A measure of how much land and water a person or population needs to provide the resources they use and absorb their waste
Exponential Growth Growth that increases by a constant percentage over time causing the population to grow faster and faster
Fertility Rate The average number of children born to a woman during her lifetime
Infrastructure The basic systems and structures that a society needs to function such as roads buildings water systems and electricity
Mortality Rate The number of deaths in a population during a specific period of time
Medical Revolution A period of major advances in medicine that greatly improved human health and increased life expectancy
