Map features Basics

| What are meridians? | Meridians are longitude lines that run from the north pole to the south pole. They are used to measure longitude. |
| What are parallels? | Parallels are lines that run east and west around the globe. By definition, they are parallel, meaning they do not intersect with each other. They are used to measure Latitude. |
| What is distance? | This is the number of miles or kilometers between two locations on a map. |
| What is the Legend/Key on a map? | This tells the user what the symbols on a map represent. |
| How does Latitude work? | Latitude are imaginary lines that run east and west around our globe, but they measure distances north and south (think of climbing a ladder). |
| How does Longitude work? | Longitude are imaginary lines that run north and south around our globe, but they measure distances east and west. |
| What is a map scale? | A map scale tells you how many miles or kilometers are on a particular length on a map (usually inches or centimeters). For example, one inch on a map might be 100 miles in reality. |
| What are map symbols? | Symbols on a map represent a variety of things that are depicted on the map. For example, a barrell might symbolize oil production on a map. Or a star symbolizes the capital city of a state. |
| What are map projections? | Map projections are maps that illustrate a particular feature on a map, but in order to do so, another aspect of the map will be inaccurate. For example, one map projection might show the outline of a continent correctly, but it's shape will be wrong. |
| What is a physical map? | A physical map illustrates the physical features of our world, such as lakes, oceans, mountains, plains, and forrests. |
| What is a political map? | A political map illustrates the borders of cities and countries, but does no illustrate the physical features of those areas. |
| What is a thematic map? | A thematic map shows a theme, or a specific topic. For example, a thematic map might show the economic industries of a country, such as oil, fishing, and farming. |
| What is the equator? | The equator is the zero degree latitude line that separates the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere. It runs around the Earth at its widest spot. |
| What is the Prime Meridian? | The Prime Meridian is the zero degree line of longitude that runs through Greenwich, England (near London). It separates the western hemisphere from the eastern hemisphere. |
| What is a hemisphere? | A hemisphere is half of a sphere. Our planet is divided into four of them (north, south, east, and west). |
| What is a compass rose? | A compass rose is a symbol that shows the map user what directions north, south, east, and west are. |
| What are the four cardinal directions? | The four cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west. |
| What are the four intermediate directions? | The four intermediate directions are northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest. |
| What are are five oceans? | Are five oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctice, Indian, and Southern. |
| What are our seven continents? | Our seven continents are North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, and Australia. |
