Context Clues

Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Definition an explanation of the word’s meaning before or after the word appears, usually set off by a comma
Example one or more examples in a text that may demonstrate the meaning of a word
Comparison determining a word’s meaning based on how it is like something else in the text
Contrast: determining a word’s meaning based on how it is unlike something else in the text
Cause and Effect the use of the word as the result of something else that happens in the text.
Context Clue a hint in the surrounding text that can help a reader infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word, phrase, or description
Infer to determine something not stated directly by using prior knowledge and evidence from the text
Example The zoo is home to various exotic animals, such as lions, tigers, elephants, and giraffes.
Comparison Her voice was as smooth as velvet, captivating the audience.
Cause and Effect The heavy rainfall caused the river to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding in the area.
Comparison Tom enjoys playing soccer; on the other hand, his sister prefers swimming.
Definition His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to see.
