| abstract | A brief overview of the investigation |
| Bar Graph | A type of graph used for descriptive data that comes from research questions asking about variables that will be counted |
| Conclusion | Summarizes the important parts of your experiment and discusses what the data, patterns, and relationships mean |
| Constants | All variables that are not changed (Sometimes called "Controlled Variables") |
| Control Group | Part of the experiment that is not being tested and is used for comparison (Sometimes called "The Control") |
| data | factual information gathered and organized for analysis |
| Data Analysis | Making sense of observations and data collected during an experiment by looking at patterns and relationships between the independent variable and the dependent variable |
| Data Table | Chart that organizes data into rows and columns (This is not a graph) |
| Dependent Variable | The response to the independent variable that can be observed (qualitative) and measured (quantitative). Sometimes called the "Responding Variable" |
| Hypothesis | A prediction of how the independent variable will affect the dependent variable |
| Independent Variable | Variable changed by the scientist; what the investigator is testing. Sometimes called the "Manipulated Variable" |
| Line Graph | A type of graph used when data has taken place over time |
| Observation | Using your senses to gather information about something |
| Procedure | A numbered, step-by-step set of directions for a scientific investigation |
| Qualitative Data | Information gathered that describes qualities or characteristics. It is collected using questionnaires, interviews, or observation |
| Quantitative data | Information gathered either by measuring or counting |
| Scientific Method | The steps scientists use to explore and understand the world around us |
| Variable | Anything that can be changed in an experiment that could affect the results |
