Mental disorders... -Depend on culture -Imply social judgement -Are not clear cut -Have no agreed upon definition
DSM-IV-TR American Psychiatric Association (2000) Purpose: To provide clear descriptions of diagnostic categories in order to enable clinicians and investigators to diagnose, communicate about, study, and treat people with various mental disorders.
DSM defines a mental disorder as: A clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern (based on the presence of a cluster of symptoms.)
DSM Category of disorders: - Anxiety Disorders - Mood disorders - Psychotic disorders
DSM Specific disorders: - PTSD - Bipolar disorder - Schizophrenia
Symptoms of mental disorder can be either: - Observable/objective (behaviors) - Subjective complaints reported by the affected person- e.g., fearful preoccupation, confusion.
Distress or disability occurs when: - Impairment in one or more important areas of functioning: social, occupational, legal or other - Symptoms/behaviors are either ego syntonic or ego dystonic.
Ego Dystonic The person is bothered by their abnormal behavior.
DSM Cons -stigma -overgeneralization -labeling -usually cases are not so clear cut
DSM Pros -language -organization -make money money -shortcut/saves time -narrows our focus
Prevalence Rate The number of active cases in a population during any given time. Given in %.
Lifetime Prevalence The number of people who have suffered from a disorder at any time in their lives.
Incidence The number of new cases in a given period of time.
Co-morbidity The presence of 2 or more disorders in the same person.
Lifetime prevalence for ANY MENTAL DISORDER = 46.4% - 57.4%
Most common categories: - any anxiety disorder - any mood disorder - any substance-abuse disorder
Most common specific mental disorders: - Major Depressive Disorder - Alcohol Abuse - Specific Phobias
Treatment team: - Psychiatrist - Psychologist - Social Worker - Medical Provider - Psychiatric Nurse
Psychiatrist Diagnose, prescribe treatment medications.
Psychologist Assessment
Social Worker Counseling, intervention, therapy, help get on feet (rehabilitate)
Medical Provider Doctor to diagnose (ex. diabetes)
Psychiatric Nurse Administers medications
