Gross Anatomy

Intro (Veterinary)

ConceptDefinition
Veterinary Gross Anatomy The cutting apart or disassociation of the entire body of domestic animals to understand the form, disposition, and structure of the tissue of which it is composed.
Tissue A group of specialized cells working together to perform a common function
Organ A somewhat independent part of the body that performs a particular function. Usually composed of two or more basic tissues
Common Integuments Skin, Hair, Nails, Claws, Feathers, Various glands
Nails & Claws outer layers of cornified epithelium
Functions of Skin protection, insulation, nourishment, etc.
Embryonic Origin the specific developmental starting point of a cell or tissue
Fascia Functions distributes blood vessels, nerves & lymphatics; compartmentalizes muscles; lines body cavities; attaches muscle to bone
Ectoderm the outermost layer: Nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves). Epidermis (outer layer of skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands). Sensory organs (eyes, inner ear, and lens). Tooth enamel and the lining of the mouth and anal canal.
Mesoderm the middle tissue layer: Muscular system (skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles). Skeletal system (bones, cartilage, and joints). Circulatory system (heart, blood vessels, and blood cells). Excretory and reproductive organs (kidneys and gonads)
Endoderm the innermost layer: Lining of the gastrointestinal (digestive) tract. Lining of the respiratory tract (lungs and trachea). Glands and organs (liver, pancreas, and thyroid gland). Bladder and the lining of the urethra.
