Unit 1 Matter
Investigating Physical Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Heating | to add heat to a substance |
| Cooling | to take away heat from a substance |
| Freeze | liquid - heat = solid |
| Melt | solid + heat = liquid |
| Evaporate | liquid + heat = gas |
| Condense | gas - heat = liquid |
| Matter | anything that has mass & takes up space |
| Physical Properties | characteristics that can be measured, tested or observed |
| Substance | a specific kind of matter |
| Conductor | a material that allows heat or an electric current to flow through easily. |
| Insulator | A material through which heat or electricity does not easily flow |
| Thermal Energy | energy that causes a transfer of heat between materials |
| Magnetism | pushing or pulling force created by a magnet (objects containing iron/steel, cobalt, nickel) |
| Mass | the amount of matter in a substance; measured in grams (g) |
| Volume | the amount of space matter takes up; measured in milliliters (mL) |
| Relative density | the ability to float or sink when compared to water |
| Physical State | classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas (depending on temperature) |
| Particle | any tiny piece or amount of matter |
| Gas | a state of matter that does not have its own shape or definite volume |
| Liquid | a state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape |
| Solid | a state of matter that has a definite shape and volume |
| Solubility | the ability of a solid to dissolve in a liquid |
| Dissolve | to mix completely in another substance |
