Landforms

canyon a deep valley with very steep rock sides, carved out by a river over millions of years.
mesa a flat-topped hill with steep sides that stands out in a flat area.
u-shaped valley a wide valley with a flat bottom carved out by a slow-moving glacier.
valley a low area of land found between hills or mountains.
v-shaped valley a narrow valley with steep sides carved out by a fast-moving river.
delta a triangle-shaped piece of land formed where a river empties into an ocean and drops its sediment.
glacier a huge, slow-moving mass of ice that shapes the land beneath it.
landform a natural physical feature found on the surface of the earth.
sand dune a hill of sand piled up and moved by the wind, usually found in deserts or on beaches.
natural resource anything from nature that people can use, like water, wood, and clean air.
physical environment the natural surroundings of an area, including the land, water, and climate.
earthquake a sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of rocks deep beneath earth's surface.
erupt/eruption the sudden burst of lava, ash, and gases from a volcano.
landslide the rapid sliding of a large mass of dirt and rock down a hill or mountain.
natural hazard a dangerous event caused by nature, like a flood, earthquake, or hurricane.
slow change a transformation of earth's surface that takes thousands or millions of years, like weathering.
soil the top layer of earth where plants grow, made of tiny rocks, water, air, and decayed matter.
volcano an opening in the earth's crust through which lava, ash, and gases can erupt.
deposition the dropping or leaving behind of rock bits and soil by wind, water, or ice.
erosion the movement of rock pieces and soil from one place to another by water, wind, or ice.
sediment small pieces of rock, sand, and soil that have been broken down.
weathering the slow breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by wind, water, or ice.
