| Idiom | a phrase where the meaning is not literal; has a hidden or figurative meaning |
| Metaphor | compares two things by stating that one thing is another |
| Simile | compares two things using the words "like" or "as" |
| Alliteration | the repetition of the first consonant sounds in several words |
| Hyperbole | an outrageous exaggeration that emphasizes a point; can even be ridiculous or funny |
| Personification | gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas |
| Onomatopoeia | the use of words that sound like their meaning, or words that mimic sound |
| Oxymoron | a phrase made up of two or more words that actually have opposite meanings |
| receive | to get something; come into possession of |
| ordinary | lacking special distinction, rank, or status |
| committee | a special group delegated to consider some matter |
| campaign | related operations aimed at achieving a particular goal |
