Partition of the British Mandate of Palestine (1947) After World War II the United Nations proposed dividing Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states leading to conflict in the region.
Suez Canal Crisis (1956) Egypt took control of the Suez Canal causing Britain France and Israel to invade Egypt before international pressure ended the conflict.
Arab-Israeli Six Day War (1967) A short war in which Israel fought neighboring Arab countries and gained territory in only six days.
OPEC (1960) A group of oil-producing countries formed to work together to control oil production and prices.
Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979) Iranian protesters seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held American hostages for 444 days.
Persian Gulf War (1991) A U.S.-led coalition fought Iraq after Iraq invaded Kuwait.
War on Terror (2001-present) A military campaign started by the United States after the 9/11 attacks to fight terrorist groups around the world.
War in Iraq (2003) A U.S.-led invasion removed Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq but led to years of conflict.
Arab Spring (2011) A series of protests and uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa calling for political change.
9/11 (2001) Terrorists attacked the United States on September 11 2001 using hijacked airplanes against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Zionism A political movement supporting the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
War in Afghanistan (2001) A war started after the 9/11 attacks when the United States invaded Afghanistan to remove the Taliban and target al-Qaeda.
