Geo: the sea

QuestionAnswer
Sea A large area of saltwater covering most of the planet
Destructive waves Waves that have a strong backwash which brings material away from a beach leading to erosion. Usually looks like high waves, packed together.
Constructive waves Waves that have a strong swash which deposits material onto the beach. Usually looks further apart and not as high.
Compressed air as water compresses air in gaps, the pressure increases , damaging the rock, when the air releases the pressure drops leading to erosion.
Abrasion The load and material from waves scrape and damages the coast leading to erosion
Attrition Rocks scrape against other rocks constantly, smoothing out each of the rocks
Hydraulic action The force of water crashing onto the coast
Solution Certain rocks like limestone get dissolved by the water
How does a headland and bay form Waves erode a section of soft rock on the coast while hard rock resists erosion. This forms a bay in between the hard rocks and headlands are known as the hard rocks
How does a sea cliff form 1. Destructive waves attack the coast, forming a notch 2. As the coast erodes, it forms an overhang 3. The overhang eventually collapses, pushing back the cliff gradually
Whats a wave-cut platform A land platform formed by the gradual retreating of a sea cliff
Fetch The strength of winds passing over the sea
How does a sea cave form It starts as a notch eroded at the base of a cliff, the notch can eventually develop into a cave
How does an arch form If erosion from a sea cave continues on, it can pierce through to the other side forming an arch
How does a sea stack form If the roof of an arch collapses a sea stack can form
How does a sea stump form Its just when a sea stack eventually erodes
How does a beach form 1.Constructive waves deposits load across the area, destructive waves cant carry deposits back out 2. Heavy material deposits first, its gets eroded quicker by waves leading to the beach getting rougher as you move in deeper 3. Beach is formed.
Whats a beach A beach is a gentle sloping of sand, shingles or stone that is found between high and low tide
What grass helps naturally prevent erosion Marram grass
What is longshore drift Waves approach at an angle, material gets deposited and then dragged straight out, forming a zigzag pattern. This also forms many features
Sand spit A narrow ridge of sand and silt deposited at the edge of a bay. Formed by longshore drift
Sand bar Ridge of sand and silt that stretches across a bay. Formed by longshore drift
Lagoon Shallow body of sea water in a bay that was cut off by a sand bar. Formed by longshore drift
Tombolo A ridge of deposited material that stretches into the sea. Formed by longshore drift
Name four man made structures that prevent erosion Groynes, sea walls, gabions and rock armour
Groynes Concrete or wooden fences that are built into the sea
Sea walls Walls at the edge of coast built to stop the power of incoming waves
Gabions and where are they found Steel wire cages filled with stones and meant to act like sea walls. Can be found in Lahinch co. Clare
Rock armour and where are they found Boulders placed along the coast and acts like sea walls to prevent erosion. Can be found in Standhill, Co. Sligo
