Chapter 16 Vocab

physical science

TermDefinition
virtual image cannot be projected on screen; an image formed by diverging light rays that is perceived by the brain, even though the light rays do not actually originate from the place where the image appears to be located
real image can be projected on a screen; an image that appears at a certain location as a result of rays of light converging at that location
ultrasound sound waves with frequency above 20,000 Hz; cannot be heard by humans
infrasound slow vibrations of frequencies lower than 20 Hz
pitch perception of how high or low a sound is; related to the frequency of the sound waves
sound wave a longitudinal wave that is cause by vibrations and that travels through material medium
intensity amount of energy that flows through a certain area in a specific amount of time
photon unit of light; massless energy containing particle that electromagnetic waves sometimes behave like; the frequency of the electromagnetic wave increases with the energy of the particle
sonar a system that uses the reflection of sound waves to detect objects underwater
resonance the process by which an object is made to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequencies
dispersion in optics, the process of separating a wave (such as white light) of different frequencies into its individual component waves (the different colors)
prism in optics, a system that consists of two or more plane surfaces of a transparent solid at an angle with each other
magnification the increase of an object's apparent size by using lenses or mirrors
lens a transparent object that refracts light waves such that they converge or diverge to create an image
light ray a line in space that matches the direction of the flow of radiant energy
radar radio detection and ranging, a system that uses reflected radio waves to determine the velocity and location of objects

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
