Nutrition through the Life Cycle

TermDefinition
Adolescence The period of life between childhood and adulthood
Anemia A health condition caused by a deficiency of red blood cells or of hemoglobin in the blood
Antibody A protein made by the immune system to defend the body against infection and disease
Colostrum A yellowish liquid, especially rich in immune factors, secreted by the mammary gland of a mother a few days before and after the birth of a baby
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) A set of symptoms that can occur in a newborn whose mother drinks alcohol while pregnant
Food jags An eating behavior in which a child will only eat one food or a small group of foods every day or on a very consistent basis
Growth spurt A period of rapid physical growth
Infant A child in the first year of life
Lactation The production of breast milk by a mother’s body following the birth of a baby
Life cycle A series of stages through which people pass between birth and death
Nutrient dense Foods and beverages that provide vitamins, minerals, and other substances that may have positive health effects, but supply relatively few calories
Puberty The time during which a person develops sexual maturity
Sedentary activity An activity that requires much sitting or little movement
Toddler A child between one and three years of age
Trimester A span of about 13 to 14 weeks that represents one-third of the pregnancy period in humans
