Anatomy Lab Midterm

All the things Professor McPherson told us to memorize

QuestionAnswer
Callus An abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum.
Keratinocytes The most numerous of the epidermal cells (90% of epidermal skin cells). They produce keratin- a tough fibrous protein that helps protect the skin and underlying tissues from heat, microbes and chemicals.
Arrector Pili Smooth muscles attached to hairs; contraction pulls the hairs into a vertical position, resulting in "goose bumps"
Melanocytes 8% of epidermis. They produce melanin: a yellow-red or brown-black pigment that contributes to skin color and absorbs damaging ultraviolet light
Free Nerve Endings Dendrites that lack any apparent structural specialization.
Sebaceous Glands Oil glands; Simple, branched acinar glands.
Vernix Caseosa Fatty substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus from the constant exposure to the amniotic fluid in which it is bathed.
Basal Cell Carcinoma Account for about 78% of all skin cancers. The tumors arise from cells in the stratum basale of the epidermis and rarely metastasize.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma Account for about 20% of all skin cancer, arise from squamous cells of the epidermis, and they have a variable tendency to metastasize.
Melanoma Arise from melanocytes and account for about 2% of all skin cancers.
Subcutaneous Layer Consists of areolar and adipose tissues. It serves as a storage for fat and contains large blood vessels that supply the skin.
Papillary Region 1/5 of thickness of dermis. Consists of areolar connective tissue containing thin collagen and fine elastic. The surface area is dermal papillae- small, finger-like structures that project into the undersurface of the epidermis.
Reticular Region Attached to subcutaneous layer and consists of dense irregular connective tissue containing fibroblasts, bundles of collagen and some coarse elastic fibers.
Epidermis Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Consists of keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhan cells and Merkel cells.
