fossil fuel any fuel, such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas, that is made from the remains of prehistoric plants and animals
gulf a large inlet of the sea that cuts deeply into the land
nomadic herding the raising of livestock for food by moving herds from place to place to find pasture and water
crude oil petroleum as it comes out of the ground and before it has been refined or processed into useful products
nonrenewable resource a resource, such as oil or coal, that takes so long to form that it cannot be replaced
oil reserves oil that has been discovered but that remains unused in the ground
renewable resources a resource, such as sunlight or wood, that cannot be used up or that can be replaced as quickly as it is used up
capital city a city that is the governmental center of a country or region; can also be a primate city
primate city the largest and most important city in a country
site the specific place where something is located, including its physical setting
situation the way a place is positioned in relation to its wider surroundings
environmental degradation damage to or destruction of the natural environment; can destroy habitats, reduce biodiversity, and use up natural resource.
groundwater water lying deep under the ground that supplies wells and springs; source of drinking water for over half the people in the world
salinization the buildup of salt in soil or water
water stress the condition that occurs when people don’t have enough clean, fresh water to meet their everyday needs
