Adaptations

5th Grade Plant & Animal Adaptations, Florida Standards

TermDefinition
adaptation a characteristic of a plant or animal that helps it live in its environment
environment an area with living and non living things that co exist toegther.
natural selection a process where animals that are best able to survive an environment will; and those that can't survive, won't.
biodiversity a mix of different types of living organisms in an area
charateristic a trait or something about the plant or animal that has a purpose
camouflage a way that an animal can hide or blend in to their surrounding with the colors or patterns on its skin or fur to either hide from predators or sneak up on prey.
carnivore an animal that only eats meat
omnivore an animal that eats mean and plants
herbivore an animal that only eats plants
nocturnal an animal that is awake and active at night, and sleeps or rests during the day.
hibernate When an animal eats extra food to survive a long sleep during a time of harsh weather and low food, usually the winter.
migrate When an animal travels to another area for food, water, and space to live when its home is experiencing harsh weather or low resources.
tundra a type of environment that is very cold, low rain and humidity, low sunshine, not many plants and some animals.
desert a type of rainforest that is very dry, low humidity and little plants and some animals.
rainforest a type of environment where it rains most of the year, is close to the equator so it also receives a lot of sun and is very humid. Also has lush forests with lots of wildlife.
swamp a type of environment that has poor draining soil, so it very wet and has standing water for many months of the year. Can be hot and humid, good amount of plant and animal that can tolerate the water.
prey Animals that are eaten by bigger or meat eating animals.
predator Animals that eat other animals, usually hunts and catches its food.
tolerate to be able to deal with or able to survive
moderate a medium amount
