Chapter 14 & 15

Ratio and Percentage Strengths, Simple Dilutions, Mixtures, and Compounding

QuestionAnswer
How many grams of dextrose are in 500 mL of D5W (5% dextrose in water)? 25 g dextrose
A 1 L bag of 0.9% NaCl contains how many grams of sodium chloride? 9 g NaCl
How many grams of hydrocortisone are in 60 g of 2.5% hydrocortisone cream? 1.5 g hydrocortisone
Express 1:250 as a percentage strength. 0.4%
A 1:2000 solution of gentamicin is ordered. How many grams are in 500 mL? 0.25 g
How many grams of active ingredient are needed to make 300 mL of a 1:600 solution? 0.5 g
How many grams of NaCl are in 250 mL of 0.45% normal saline? 1.125 g NaCl
Convert 0.2% to ratio strength. 1:500
In what ratio should 25% and 3% hydrogen peroxide solutions be mixed to make a 5% solution? Ratio = 2 : 20 or 1 : 10
How many grams of 20% and 5% salicylic acid ointment are needed to make 300 g of 10% ointment? 20% needed = (5/15) × 300 = 100 g 5% needed = (10/15) × 300 = 200 g
Mix 1% and 2.5% hydrocortisone ointments to make 100 g of 2% ointment. How much of each? 2.5% = (1/1.5)×100 ≈ 66.67 g 1% = (0.5/1.5)×100 ≈ 33.33 g
How many mL of 20% boric acid solution are needed to make 500 mL of 6% solution? SV × 20 = 500 × 6 SV = 3000 ÷ 20 = 150 mL
You need 250 mL of 0.5% solution. Stock is 5%. How much stock volume? SV × 5 = 250 × 0.5 SV = 125 ÷ 5 = 25 mL
You have pure (100%) zinc oxide. How many grams of 10% ointment can be made from 25 g of pure zinc oxide? 25 × 100 = DW × 10 DW = 2500 ÷ 10 = 250 g
From 40 g of 100% salicylic acid powder, how much 20% ointment can you make? 40 × 100 = DW × 20 DW = 4000 ÷ 20 = 200 g
