| Ice Sheet | a large thick area of ice that covers a region |
| Ice Shelf | A thick layer of ice that extends above the water |
| Calving | The process in which a section of ice breaks off the edge of a glacier |
| Iceberg | A huge piece of floating ice that broke off from an ice shelf or glacier and fell into the sea |
| Katabatic Wind | The strong fast cold winds that blow down from the interior of Antartica |
| Lichen | tiny, sturdy plants that grow in rocky areas |
| Krill | The tiny shrimplike sea creatures that are eaten by whales and many other sea creatures |
| Plankton | Plants or animals that ride along with water currents |
| Treaty | An official agreement, neogiated and signed by each party |
| Research Station | A base for scientific research and observation often in a remote location |
| Ozone | The certian kind of oxygen that forms a layer around Earth in the atmosphere; It blocks out many of the most harmful rays from the sun. |
| Remote Sensing | The method of getting information from far away, such as deep below the ground |
