active ingredient the ingredient in a drug that produces the therapeutic effect
automated medication dispensing system system used to provide access to medications that is configured to meet the needs of a specific facility, such as a patient care unit in a hospital, long-term care facility, surgery center, or provider’s office, 24 hours a day; the most common is Pyxis
computerized order order transmitted via computer
controlled substances potentially dangerous or habit-forming drugs whose sale and use are strictly regulated by the Controlled Substances Act because of their potential for abuse
enteric-coated coated with a substance that dissolves in the intestine but not in the stomach (enteric—pertaining to the small intestine)
expiration date date after which a drug should not be used
facsimile order order transmitted through a facsimile machine
incident report form used for giving information about a drug error, patient injury, or accident
infusion placement of a tube into a vein for the purpose of slowly adding fluids to the body (e.g., dextrose, plasma); also known as intravenous (IV) drip
inhalation administration of drugs by way of droplets or mist that the patient breathes in
insertion placement of an object into a body cavity (e.g., putting a suppository into the rectum)
instillation placement of drops of liquid into the eyes, ears, nose, or some other body cavity
irrigation process of rinsing a body cavity with water or other solutions
medication administration record (MAR) form documenting drugs that are administered to a particular patient every day; each dose is checked off after it is given
outpatient patient who is not hospitalized; a walk-in (ambulatory) patient
pharmacy requisition form form on which to order supplies and medications from the pharmacy
PRN order drug order to administer a drug as needed
phone order telephone order type of verbal order that is communicated via telephone
problem-intervention-evaluation (PIE) method of organizing information for charting patient progress
problem-oriented medical record (POMR) method of documenting in which the chart is organized according to a numbered list of problems or diagnoses
routine order drug order by which the ordered drug is administered until a discontinuation order is written or until a specified termination date is reached
standing order drug order that is to be continued until further notice
stat order a single drug order that is administered immediately
subjective-objective-assessment-plan (SOAP) method of organizing information for charting patient progress
verbal order order that is expressed orally and not written down
