Terms associated with disease states
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Symptom | Subjective evidence that cannot be measured, such as a headache. |
| Sign | Objective evidence that can be measured or seen, such as a rash. |
| Etiology | The cause of the disease. |
| Idiopathic | A disease or condition that arises without a known cause. |
| Risk factors | Factors that have been identified as increasing the chances of developing or contracting a specific disease. |
| Stage | A term used to classify a patient's condition, including the degree of involvement or progression. For example, stage IV cancer focuses on the progression of the disease. |
| Status | A term used to classify a patient's condition, including the state of the disease and how it is affecting the patient. For example, guarded status describes how the disease affects the patient. |
| Complication | Undesirable effect of a disease that can lead to another disease or condition, which often requires additional treatment. For example, uncontrolled hypertension can lead to kidney disease. |
