Academic Vocabulary

TermDefinition
flashback Parts of a story that go back to an earlier period of time
foreshadow This gives reader a hint about what is going to happen later on in the book
tone A method of author’s craft. This is how the author writes to set up the mood of the story!
allegory A story that has two levels of meaning.
connotation A idea or feeling associated with a word or image.
extended metaphor Hope is being compared to a bird throughout the entire poem.
anecdote A short story about a funny or interesting event. This is usually told in writing to make a point about something else.
analogy A comparison that helps to make a point or that serves as an explanation.
stanza a group of lines in a poem
symbol an image or sign that represents something else
genre a type of writing
narrative a type of writing that tells a story
conflict The main struggle of a story. It can be internal or external.
Protagonist The hero or main character
Antagonist The character working against the main character
characterization A method of author's craft. This is how the author develops characters using actions, dialogue, and description.
motivation This is why a character behaves a certain way or shows what a character wants.
theme The lesson that the author is trying to teach you. The main message about life that a piece of literature portrays.
point of view The perspective from which the story is told.
inference A conclusion based on evidence that is not explicitly in the text. This is implicitly drawn from the text and your background knowledge.
