Antihypertensives

ACE Inhibitors/ ARBs

TermDefinition
What is an ACE inhibitor do? Lowers blood pressure by blocking the angiotensin converting enzyme from converting AT1 to AT2. This will help kidneys excrete salt and water since there is minimal aldosterone release and therefore cause vasodilation and BP to decrease.
Lisinopril ACE Inh Prinivil, Zestril side effects: dry cough, hyperkalemia
Enalapril ACE Inh Vasotec side effects: cough, hypotension
Benazapril ACE Inh Lotensin side effects: cough, dizziness
Ramipril ACE Inh Altace side effects: cough, angioedema
Captopril ACE Inh Capoten side effects: rash, cough
Quinapril ACE Inh Accupril side effects: cough, hyperkalemia
Trandolapril ACE Inh Mavik side effects: cough, hypotension
Fosinopril ACE Inh Monopril side effects: cough and dizziness
What does an ARB do? Angiotensin II Receptor blockers block type 1 angiotensin II receptors on blood vessels and other tissues preventing angiotensin II from binding.
Losartan ARB Cozaar side effects: hyperkalemia, dizziness
Valsartan ARB Diovan side effects: Hypotension, fatigue
Olmesartan ARB Benicar side effects: diarrhea, dizziness
Irbesartan ARB Avapro side effects: hyperkalemia, fatigue
Telmisartan ARB Micardis side effects: hypotension
Candestartan ARB Atacand side effects: dizziness
