Evolution Change in populations of organisms over time
fossil record shows evolution change in organisms because they look different in the layers
relative dating finding the approximate age based on when it is in the layers of fossils (top is new and bottom is old)
Carbon dating finding the exact age of a fossil using chemical test ( called radio meter dating)
anatomical similarities when body structures bones are the same it gives evidence they evolved from the same organism
Homologous structures Bone structures that are the same even if the outside looks different. gives evidence that they evolved from the same ancestors
What is the order for the Taxa-Eight - Level system Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
Analogous structures structure that are similar (wings, fins, etc) but are totally different under the surface but don't give a common ancestors
vestigial organs no longer used, give evidence that they evolved from something that did use them
DNA as evidence many species have really similar DNA. gives evidence that they evolved from each other
Taxonomy the scientific study of how living things are classified. scientists like to organize living things by scientific name to help them communicate easier and understand what they are studying
Classification The process of grouping things based on their similarities
scientific name scientists usually refer to organisms using a two part naming system or binomial nomenclature
species any organism breeding successfully with another organism ( offspring are fertile) is a species
taxa eight level system the eight level system of classification form broadest to most specific
