Energy

TermDefinition
Chemical energy Energy stored in substances (like food, batteries, or fuel)
Energy The ability to do work or cause change.
Mechanical energy Energy of motion and position (moving objects or stored energy in objects).
Atoms Tiny building blocks that make up all matter.
Molecules Groups of atoms joined together.
Kinetic Energy Energy of motion (anything moving has it).
Potential Energy Stored energy (energy waiting to be used)
Transfer Moving energy from one place or object to another.
Battery A device that stores chemical energy and changes it into electrical energy.
Complete Circuit A closed path that allows electricity to flow.
Electric Current The flow of electric charge (electricity moving).
Electrical Circuit A path through which electricity flows.
Static Electricity A buildup of electric charges that stay in one place.
Insulator A material that does NOT allow energy (like electricity or heat) to pass through easily.
Conductor A material that allows energy (like electricity or heat) to pass through easily.
Thermal Energy Heat energy (energy related to temperature).
Electric Energy Energy from moving electric charges.
Conduct To allow heat or electricity to pass through.
Insulate To stop or slow down heat or electricity from passing through.
Sound Energy Energy produced by vibrations that travel through matter.
Light Energy Energy that we can see; travels as waves.
Reflect To bounce light off a surface.
Refract To bend light when it passes through different materials.
Absorb (light) To take in light energy instead of reflecting it.
Work When a force moves an object over a distance.
Friction A force that slows objects down when they rub together.
Conduction (heat) Heat transfer through direct contact.
Convection (heat) Heat transfer through movement of liquids or gases.
Radiation (heat) Heat transfer through waves (no contact needed, like from the sun).
Pitch (sound) How high or low a sound is.
Closed Circuit A circuit where electricity can flow (same as complete circuit).
Open Circuit A broken circuit where electricity cannot flow.
Energy Transformation When energy changes from one form to another (like battery → light).
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred or changed.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
