Simple Machines
| Term | Definition |

| inclined plane | a flat surface that is tilted at an angle |
| simple machine | a basic tool that makes work easier to do and has few or no moving parts |
| distance | the amount of space between two points |
| force | a push or pull that can change the position of an object |
| work | the use of force to move something over a distance |
| screw | a simple machine that changes a circular force to an up-or-down force |
| wedge | a simple machine, such as a nail or an ax, that changes the angle and dirction of force |
| threads | the grooved, or spiral edge twisted around the pole of a screw |
| friction | the resistance to movement caused when two surfaces touch |
| load | something that is carried or moved |
| pulley | a simple machine made of a wheel with a grooved rim over which a rope of cable is looped |
| fixed pulley | a pulley that is atteached to something and does not move |
| mechanical advantage | the number of times a machine multiplies the force put into it |
| movable pulley | a pulley that moves with the load |
| counterweight | a heavy weight used to balance the weight of an elevator car |
| lever | a simple machine with a bar that allows heavy objects to be lifted or moved |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine made from a wheel rotating around a fixed point |
| wheelbarrow | a machine used for carrying heavy loads, made up of a wheel and axle, a lever, and a container |
| fulcrum | the point of suppoirt on which a lever pivots |
