Forces & Motion

TermDefinition
Gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other. On Earth, gravity pulls objects toward the ground.
Friction A force that slows down or stops motion when two surfaces rub against each other.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Motion A change in position over time.
Force A push or a pull that can change an object’s motion.
Increasing Becoming greater in size, amount, or speed.
Decreasing Becoming smaller in size, amount, or speed.
Speed How fast or slow something moves.
Direction The path or way something moves.
Position The place or location of an object.
Cardinal directions The four main directions used to describe location: north, south, east, and west.
North/South/East/West The four main compass directions used to describe where something is located.
Right/Left/Forward/Back Words used to describe direction or movement from a starting position.
Distance The amount of space between two points or how far an object moves.
Relative Compared to something else; how position or motion looks from a certain point of view.
Axis An imaginary line that an object spins or rotates around.
Data table A chart used to organize and record information during an investigation.
Prediction A thoughtful guess about what will happen based on evidence or prior knowledge.
Model A representation (drawing, object, or idea) used to explain or show how something works.
Variable A factor in an experiment that can change.
Constant A factor in an experiment that stays the same.
