Learners with Emotional or Behavioral Disorders

| Emotional or behavioral disorders | A disorder that includes aggression, anxiety, depression, poor school performance, poor coping skills |
| Externalizing behavior | Involves striking out against others |
| Internalizing behavior | Involves mental or emotional conflicts, such as depression and anxiety |
| Comorbidity | The co-occurrence of two or more conditions in the same individual |
| Aggressive, acting-out behavior (externalizing | Hitting, fighting, teasing, yelling, refusing to comply with requests, crying, destructiveness, vandalism, extortion |
| Aggression | Hostile or violent behavior, verbal or physical, aimed at harming or dominating others |
| Immature, withdrawn behavior and depression (internalizing) | Involves turning emotional distress inward, often resulting in social isolation, low self-esteem, and school refusal |
| Encopresis | Involuntary or voluntary repeated leakage of feces into clothing in children, typically resulting from chronic, severe constipation or behavioral/emotional issues |
| Manifestation determination (MD) | To protect students with disabilities from being punished for behaviors related to their disability |
| Functional behavioral assessment (FBA) | A process used to identify the purpose behind a challenging behavior, typically attention, escape, or sensory needs |
| Behavioral intervention plan (BIP) | Individualized written plan designed to address, reduce, and replace challenging behaviors that interfere with a student's learning |
| Positive behavioral intervention and supports (PBIS) | An evidence-based, three-tiered framework designed to improve safety and student behavior |
| Interim alternative educational settings (IAES) | A temporary, specialized placement for students with disabilities, determines by the IEP team |
| Schizophrenia | They believe that they are controlled by alien forces or might have other delusions or hallucinations |
| Enuresis | Involuntary urination, the inability to control urine. Occurring at least twice weekly |
| Zero tolerance | Enforces strict, predetermined punishment for any violation of rules, regardless of circumstances |
