Anatomical Directions of the Brain
Question | Answer |

rostral/anterior | towards head of a four legged animal |
Caudal/Posterior | towards the tail of a four legged animal |
Inferior/ventral | toward the belly of four legged animal |
Superior/dorsal | towards the back of a four legged animal |
Neuraxis | imaginary line that runs the length of the spinal cord to the brain |
Midline | divides the body into two equal halves |
Ipsilateral | referring to structures on the same side of the midline |
Contralateral | referring to the structures on the otherside of the midline |
medial | meaning toward the midline |
Lateral | meaning away from the midline |
Proximal | closer to the center |
Distal | farther away from another structure |
Coronal section | anatomical section dividing the brain front to back parallel to the face |
Sagittal section | parallel to the the midline |
Midsagittal section | divides the brain into two approx equal parts |
horizontal/axial sections | dives the brain from top to bottom |
