Anatomical Directions of the Brain

QuestionAnswer
rostral/anterior towards head of a four legged animal
Caudal/Posterior towards the tail of a four legged animal
Inferior/ventral toward the belly of four legged animal
Superior/dorsal towards the back of a four legged animal
Neuraxis imaginary line that runs the length of the spinal cord to the brain
Midline divides the body into two equal halves
Ipsilateral referring to structures on the same side of the midline
Contralateral referring to the structures on the otherside of the midline
medial meaning toward the midline
Lateral meaning away from the midline
Proximal closer to the center
Distal farther away from another structure
Coronal section anatomical section dividing the brain front to back parallel to the face
Sagittal section parallel to the the midline
Midsagittal section divides the brain into two approx equal parts
horizontal/axial sections dives the brain from top to bottom
