Waves Review

QuestionAnswer
What is the highest point of a wave? Crest
What is the lowest point of a wave? Trough
What is Wavelength? The distance from any point on one wave to an identical point on the next wave
What is amplitude? The height of a wave
If you have greater amplitude there will be more energy, louder sound, and brighter what? Light
What is frequency? The number of waves produced in a given amount of time
Fill in the blanks: A wave with high frequency has a ________pitch and more energy? High
Fill in the blanks: A wave with a low frequency has a ______ pitch and less energy? low
What does the A in AL stand for? Amplitude
What does the P in PF stand for? Pitch
True or false: Electromagnetic waves require a medium? False
True or false: Mechanical waves require a medium to travel? True
What are two types of waves? Mechanical and Electromagnetic
What color on the electromagnetic spectrum has the longest wavelength? red
what color on the electromagnetic spectrum has the shortest wavelength? violet
What is reflection? Something that occurs when waves bounce off an object
What is absorption? The transfer of energy carried by light to particles of matter
what is refraction? The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle through matter with different densities
What is diffraction? The bending of waves around barriers or through openings
What is sound? a mechanical wave caused by vibrations (must travel through a medium)
What is the Doppler effect? The change in the frequency of a sound caused by the motion of the source of the sound
What is an echo? a reflected sound wave
True or false: Waves can be transferred through matter and space? True
What is a medium? A substance that carries a wave
What are some examples of a mechanical wave? Sound waves, water waves, spring waves, and seismic waves
What are the two types of a mechanical wave? Longitudinal and transverse
What is a transverse wave? a wave that moves up and down perpendicular to the direction that the wave travels
what is a longitudinal wave? a wave that moves back and forth in the same direction that the wave travels
What are some examples of a transverse wave? ripples in the water, waves on a string, and ocean waves
What are the two parts of a longitudinal wave? Compression and rarefaction
What is the compression of a longitudinal wave? The part where the particles are closest together
What is the rarefaction of a longitudinal wave? The part where the particles are furthest apart
Electromagnetic waves can travel through space and what else? Matter
What are some examples of an electromagnetic wave? Light waves, x-rays, radio waves, and microwaves
Electromagnetic waves are also what type of wave? Transverse waves
Each color on the electromagnetic spectrum has its own what? Wavelength
Fill in the blanks: White things _____________ all light? Reflect
Fill in the blanks: Black things ______________ all light? absorb
The frequency determines what? Energy, wavelength, and pitch
In the Doppler effect the object has a what kind of pitch as it approaches? Higher pitch
In the doppler effect the object has a what kind of pitch as it leaves? Lower pitch
What are two examples of the Doppler effect? A Motorcycle and a race car

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
