| Activated Carbon | A filter media that removes chemicals, odors, and discoloration from aquarium water. |
| Algae | Simple aquatic plants that grow in aquariums, often caused by excess light or nutrients. |
| Biofilm | A thin layer of beneficial bacteria that grows on surfaces inside the aquarium. |
| Dechlorinator | A water conditioner that removes chlorine and chloramine from tap water to make it safe for fish. |
| Fry | Newly hatched baby fish in an aquarium. |
| Nitrate | A less toxic waste product in aquariums formed at the end of the nitrogen cycle. |
| Nitrite | A toxic waste product produced when bacteria break down ammonia in an aquarium. |
| Nitrogen Cycle | The process where beneficial bacteria convert fish waste (ammonia) into nitrite and then nitrate. |
| Thermometer | A tool used to measure the water temperature in an aquarium. |
| Detritus | Decaying waste such as fish waste, uneaten food, and dead plant matter in an aquarium. |
| Aeration | The process of adding oxygen to aquarium water, usually by surface movement. |
| Aerobe | An organism that needs oxygen to survive in an aquarium. |
| Air Stone | A device connected to an air pump that releases bubbles to increase oxygen in the water. |
| Algicide | A chemical used to kill or control algae in an aquarium. |
| Alkaline | Water with a pH above 7.0 in an aquarium. |
| Anaerobe | An organism that lives without oxygen, often found in deep substrate areas. |
| Anoxic | A condition where there is little to no oxygen in aquarium water or substrate. |
| Hospital Tank | A separate aquarium used to treat sick or injured fish. |
| Mineralization | The breakdown of waste into minerals that plants can use in an aquarium. |
| Slime Coat | A protective mucus layer on fish that helps prevent disease and injury. |
| Invertebrates | Aquarium animals without backbones, such as shrimp and snails. |
| Vertebrates | Aquarium animals with backbones, such as fish. |
| Acidic | Water with a pH below 7.0 in an aquarium. |
| Autotroph | An organism, like plants or algae, that makes its own food using light or chemicals. |
| Biomass | The total amount of living organisms in an aquarium. |
| Demersal | Fish that live or feed near the bottom of the aquarium. |
| Epoxy | A waterproof adhesive used to attach rocks or decorations in aquariums. |
| Parasites | Organisms that live on or in fish and cause harm. |
| Water Hardness | The amount of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, in aquarium water. |
| Turbidity | How cloudy or clear aquarium water is due to particles suspended in it. |
