Unit 6 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
variable A symbol (like a letter) that stands for a number we don’t yet know.
Solution to an equation A number (or numbers) that make an equation true when substituted for the variable.
Term A number, variable, or product of numbers and variables separated by + or − signs.
Equivalent expressions Two expressions that have the same value for every possible replacement of their variables.
Coefficient The number multiplied by a variable in a term (e.g., 4 in 4x).
Base of a power The number that is multiplied by itself.
Exponent The small number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor.
Perfect square A number that is the square of an integer.
Perfect cube A number that is the cube of an integer.
Dependent variable The variable whose value depends on another variable
Independent variable The variable that you choose or that causes changes in the dependent variable
Distributive property Multiplying a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying each addend then adding: a(b+c)=ab+ac
Equation A math sentence that states two expressions are equal, using an equals sign
Evaluate To find the value of an expression by performing the operations.
Expression A combination of numbers, variables, and operations (no equals sign).
Ordered pair A pair of numbers written (x,y) that gives a point’s position on a coordinate plane.
Order of operations The rules for which calculations to do first (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction).
Product The result of multiplying two or more numbers.
Sum The result of adding two or more numbers.
Unit rate A comparison of two quantities with a denominator of one (e.g., miles per hour).
Constant A fixed number that does not change.
