Matter

TermDefinition
Mass The amount of matter in an object. Heavier objects usually have more mass.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Physical Property A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing what it is.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up.
Atom The smallest building block of matter that still keeps the properties of an element.
Molecule Two or more atoms joined together.
Space The area that matter takes up.
Mixture Two or more substances mixed together without forming a new substance.
Physical Change A change in size, shape, or state that does not create a new substance.
Substance A type of matter with a specific and unchanging makeup.
Solubility How well a substance can dissolve in a liquid.
Conservation of Matter Matter is not created or destroyed; it only changes form.
Dissolve When a substance spreads out evenly in a liquid.
Separated When parts of a mixture are taken apart.
Chemical Change A change that forms a new substance.
Condense When a gas changes into a liquid.
Evaporate When a liquid slowly changes into a gas.
Evaporation The process of a liquid changing into a gas.
Evidence Observations or information that show something happened.
Gas A state of matter that spreads out to fill all available space.
Liquid A state of matter that flows and takes the shape of its container.
Particles Tiny pieces that make up matter, such as atoms and molecules.
Property A characteristic used to describe matter.
States of Matter The different forms matter can exist in: solid, liquid, and gas.
