what is competence? this is the ability to adapt to one's environment
what are developmental pathways? their used to describe the sequence and timing of particular behaviors and to highlight the known and suspected relationships of behaviors over time
what are developmental tasks? their psychosocial tasks of childhood that reflect broad domains of competence and tell us how children typically progress within each of these domains as they grow
what is equifinality? this is a concept that similar outcomes may stem from different early experiences
what are externalizing problems? behaviors that begin during childhood and encompass acting out behaviors such as aggression and delinquent behavior
what are some historical views of mental health problems and causes of problems the ancient greek and roman societies believed that any person with a physical or mental disorder, or deformity was an economic burden and a social embarrassment
what are internalizing problems behaviors that begin during childhood and include anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms and withdrawn behavior
what is multifinality? this is the concept that various outcomes may stem from similar beginnings
what are protective factors? a variable that precedes a negative outcome of interest and decreases the chances that the outcome will occur
what are psychological disorders? a pattern of behavioral, cognitive, or physical symptoms that include one or more prominent features.
what is resilience? this is the ability to avoid negative outcomes despite being at risk for psychopathology
what are risk factors? a variable that precedes a negative outcome of interest and increases the chances that the outcome will occur
what is stigma? a cluster of negative attitudes and beliefs that motivate fear, rejection and discrimination against people with mental illnesses
what are some risk factors that increase children's vulnerability to psychopathology? poverty, parental mental illness, divorce, etc.
what are children from poor & disadvantaged families are more likely to be diagnosed with? conduct disorders, chronic illness, emotional disorders, cognitive/learning challenges
