corroborate Part of Speech: verb Definition: to support an idea, statement, or character's point of view by giving more evidence or proof Sentence: A witness was able to corroborate his statement.
prevailing Part of Speech: adjective Definition: the idea or feeling that is the strongest Sentence: What's the prevailing view on this in your country?
indicate Part of Speech: verb Definition: to pick or point out Sentence: Dotted lines indicate the text's margins.
tone Part of Speech: noun Definition: the way authors express their personal opinions about themselves, the content, subject, and/or the audience Sentence: Don't use that rude tone of voice with me.
mood Part of Speech: noun Definition: the emotions; a reader feels when reading the excerpt Sentence: He was obviously in a mood.
purpose Part of Speech: noun Definition: the reason the text exists. It is what the author or speaker hopes to accomplish by writing the text Sentence: I didn't do it on purpose.
perspective Part of Speech: noun Definition: a way of thinking about and understanding something Sentence: He moved around to get a long perspective view of the street.
audience Part of Speech: noun Definition: those who actively engage with texts, interpret the texts according to their own knowledge and experiences, and use the texts to accomplish their own purposes Sentence: The audience began to clap.
expository techniques Part of Speech: noun Definition: the elements an author uses that focus on central idea, provide evidence and examples, and present logical conclusions Sentence: (ex.: facts, statistics, testimony, text, data, main ideas, etc.)
stylistic Part of Speech: adjective Definition: of or concerning style (usually used when discussing elements in writing, similar to techniques) Sentence: There are huge stylistic differences between Bach and Liszt.
closure Part of Speech: noun Definition: a sense of resolution or conclusion Sentence: The only thing that brings real closure is the truth.
suspense Part of Speech: noun Definition: a feeling of anxious curiosity, it often builds during the Rising Action of a story Sentence: Come on, Fran, don't keep me in suspense!
adaptation Part of Speech: noun Definition: a story or work that is based on an older story, they often include changes to the original story Sentence: Filming her adaptation of a beloved children's book.
parenthetical citations Part of Speech: noun Definition: Citations are brief references within the text that provide readers with the source of the information. Sentence: Parenthetical means the information is included in parenthesis ( ).
Works Cited Part of Speech: noun Definition: A Works Cited page is a list at the end of paper or text that shows all the sources that were used to find the information. Sentence: It gives credit to the authors and helps readers know where the facts came from.
Latin prefix uni- Definition of "uni-": on; single Word that uses uni-: unicycle Definition of unicycle: a cycle with a single wheel, typically used by acrobats Sentence using unicycle: The clown rode a unicycle into the circus ring.
