A-Level Greek

Odyssye 16: Lines 276-300

TermDefinition
ἤν περ καὶ διὰ δῶμα ποδῶν ἕλκωσι θύραζε ἢ βέλεσι βάλλωσι: σὺ δ᾽ εἰσορόων ἀνέχεσθαι. Even if they also drag me through the house by the feet to the door or attack me with missiles: but you, looking on, endure.
But indeed order them to cease from their folly, dissuading with sweet words: but they won't obey you at all: for indeed the fatal day stands near them.
ἄλλο δέ τοι ἐρέω, σὺ δ᾽ ἐνὶ φρεσὶ βάλλεο σῇσιν: ὁππότε κεν πολύβουλος ἐνὶ φρεσὶ θῇσιν Ἀθήνη, But I shall tell you another thing, and you must keep it in your heart: whenever Athena, rich in counsel, puts it in your mind,
νεύσω μέν τοι ἐγὼ κεφαλῇ, σὺ δ᾽ ἔπειτα νοήσας ὅσσα τοι ἐν μεγάροισιν Ἀρήϊα τεύχεα κεῖται I shall nod to you with my head, and then you, having noticed, take as many weapons of Ares that lie in the palace
ἐς μυχὸν ὑψηλοῦ θαλάμου καταθεῖναι ἀείρας πάντα μάλ᾽: αὐτὰρ μνηστῆρας μαλακοῖς ἐπέεσσι παρφάσθαι, ὅτε κέν σε μεταλλῶσιν ποθέοντες: and place them down in the corner of the high chamber, having lifted absolutely all of them: but beguile the suitors with gentle words, when, missing them, they ask you:
'ἐκ καπνοῦ κατέθηκ᾽, ἐπεὶ οὐκέτι τοῖσιν ἐῴκει οἷά ποτε Τροίηνδε κιὼν κατέλειπεν Ὀδυσσεύς, ἀλλὰ κατῄκισται, ὅσσον πυρὸς ἵκετ᾽ ἀϋτμή. 'I have placed them away from the smoke, since they are no longer like those such as when Odysseus left, going to Troy, but they have been befouled, as much as the breath of fire has come.
πρὸς δ᾽ ἔτι καὶ τόδε μεῖζον ἐνὶ φρεσὶ θῆκε Κρονίων, μή πως οἰνωθέντες, ἔριν στήσαντες ἐν ὑμῖν, Furthermore, the Kronion one puts a greater fear in my mind, lest perhaps, having become drunk with wine and having raised a quarrel amongst us,
ἀλλήλους τρώσητε καταισχύνητέ τε δαῖτα καὶ μνηστύν: αὐτὸς γὰρ ἐφέλκεται ἄνδρα σίδηρος.' you wound each other and you shame both the feast and the wooing: for iron itself draws in men.'
νῶϊν δ᾽ οἴοισιν δύο φάσγανα καὶ δύο δοῦρε καλλιπέειν καὶ δοιὰ βοάγρια χερσὶν ἑλέσθαι, And leave two swords and two spears and two ox-hide shields for us two alone to take in our hands,
ὡς ἂν ἐπιθύσαντες ἑλοίμεθα: τοὺς δέ κ᾽ ἔπειτα Παλλὰς Ἀθηναίη θέλξει καὶ μητίετα Ζεύς. so that, rushing on, we might take them: and then Pallas Athena and counsellor Zeus will charm them.
ἄλλο δέ τοι ἐρέω, σὺ δ᾽ ἐνὶ φρεσὶ βάλλεο σῇσιν: εἰ ἐτεόν γ᾽ ἐμός ἐσσι καὶ αἵματος ἡμετέροιο, But I shall tell you another thing, and you must throw it in your heart: if you are truly mine and of our blood,
