Gestation period Period between conception and birth. Important for development (nature vs nurture influence)
Biological change Change in physical nature
Cognitive change Change in thought, intelligence, and language
Socioemotional change Change in relationships, emotions, and personality
Plastic Capacity for change is always present although it may decrease over time
Normative age-graded influence Influences similar for individuals of a particular age group
Normative history-graded influence Influences similar for individuals of a particular generation
Nonnormative life events Influences unique to a specific individual
Prenatal period Period of conception to birth
Infancy period Period of birth to 18/24 months. Marked by extreme dependence
Toddler period Period of 1 1/2 - 3 years. Transitional period
Early childhood period Period of 3-5 years. Marked by increasing self-sufficiency
Middle and late childhood period Period of 6-10 years. Mastering fundamentals
Adolescence period Period of 10-21 years. Marked by rapid biological, cognitive, and socioemotional changes
Early adult period Period of 20s-30s. Transition into adult roles
Middle adult period Period of 40s-60s. Expending involvement and responsibility
Late adult period Period of 60s-death. Time of review, retirement, and adjustment
