| Normative age-graded influence | Influences similar for individuals of a particular age group |
| Normative history-graded influence | Influences similar for individuals of a particular generation |
| Nonnormative life events | Influences unique to a specific individual |
| Prenatal period | Period of conception to birth |
| Infancy period | Period of birth to 18/24 months. Marked by extreme dependence |
| Toddler period | Period of 1 1/2 - 3 years. Transitional period |
| Early childhood period | Period of 3-5 years. Marked by increasing self-sufficiency |
| Middle and late childhood period | Period of 6-10 years. Mastering fundamentals |
