Laws and Agencies

TermDefinition
Statute passed by legislatures and approved by the president at the federal level or the governor at the state level
Regulation Requires the authority of the legislature to adopt the regulation, basically laws about a specific particular issue that do the same thing but vary in strictness
Professional standard Requirements or standards put forward by the profession but are not enforceable by law
Pure food and drug act of 1906 Prohibits the interstate transportation or sale of adulterated or misbranded medication and food
Adulterated Does meet quality or purity standards
Misbranded Medication labeling is inaccurate or misleading
The Food and Drug Cosmetic Act of 1938 Ensured that all medications are pure and safe
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the federal agency that supervises the development, testing, purity, safety, and effectiveness of prescription and OTC medication
Durham-Humphrey Amendment of 1951 requires all products to have adequate directions for use unless if tney contain the federal legend "Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription
