| Term | Definition |

| Statute | passed by legislatures and approved by the president at the federal level or the governor at the state level |
| Regulation | Requires the authority of the legislature to adopt the regulation, basically laws about a specific particular issue that do the same thing but vary in strictness |
| Professional standard | Requirements or standards put forward by the profession but are not enforceable by law |
| Pure food and drug act of 1906 | Prohibits the interstate transportation or sale of adulterated or misbranded medication and food |
| Adulterated | Does meet quality or purity standards |
| Misbranded | Medication labeling is inaccurate or misleading |
| The Food and Drug Cosmetic Act of 1938 | Ensured that all medications are pure and safe |
| Food and Drug Administration (FDA) | the federal agency that supervises the development, testing, purity, safety, and effectiveness of prescription and OTC medication |
| Durham-Humphrey Amendment of 1951 | requires all products to have adequate directions for use unless if tney contain the federal legend "Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription |
