Matter Unit

TermDefinition
Insulators Materials that do not let heat or electricity pass through easily.
Conductors Materials that let heat or electricity pass through easily.
Heating The process of making something warmer by adding heat.
Cooling The process of making something cooler by taking heat away.
Material What something is made of.
Practical Application Using science knowledge in real life to solve problems.
Expand When something gets bigger or takes up more space, usually when heated.
Contract When something gets smaller or takes up less space, usually when cooled.
Design A plan that shows how something will be made or work.
Variables Things in an experiment that can change.
Properties Characteristics of a material that describe how it looks or behaves.
Physical Change A change that affects how something looks or feels without making a new substance.
Chemical Change A change that creates a new substance.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Quantitative Data Information that is measured or counted using numbers.
Qualitative Data Information that describes qualities using words.
Control The part of an experiment that stays the same for comparison.
Mixture Two or more materials combined but not changed.
Solution A mixture where substances are evenly mixed.
Reaction A process where substances interact and change.
Substance A type of matter with its own properties.
Interaction When two or more things affect each other.
Evidence Information or signs that show something happened.
Properties Characteristics of a material that describe how it looks or behaves.
Weight How heavy something is.
Conservation The idea that matter does not disappear, even when it changes.
Vanish To seem to disappear, even though the matter is still there.
Dissolve When a substance mixes evenly into another substance.
Chemical Change A change where a new substance is formed.
Physical Change A change that affects how something looks or feels but does not make a new substance.
