| Λακεδαιμόνιοι δὲ ἐμάχοντο ἀξίως λόγου, ἄλλα τε ἀποδεικνύμενοι, ἐν οὐκ ἐπισταμένοισι μάχεσθαι ἐξεπιστάμενοι, | But the Spartans were fighting worthily of note (memorably), in general showing that they really knew how to fight against men who did not know how to fight, |
| καὶ ὅκως ἐντρέψειαν τὰ νῶτα, ἁλέες φεύγεσκον δῆθεν, οἱ δὲ βάρβαροι ὁρῶντες φεύγοντας βοῇ τε καὶ πατάγῳ ἐπήισαν, | and in particular, whenever they turned their backs, they kept on pretending to flee in a group, but the barbarians, seeing them fleeing, began to go after them with both a shout and crash, |
| οἳ δ᾽ ἂν καταλαμβανόμενοι ὑπέστρεφον ἀντίοι εἶναι τοῖσι βαρβάροισι, μεταστρεφόμενοι δὲ κατέβαλλον πλήθεϊ ἀναριθμήτους τῶν Περσέων· | but when they (the Spartans) were being overtaken they kept on turning around to face the barbarians, and when they turned around they were striking down countless numbers of Persians; |
| and few of the Spartans fell there. But when the Persians were in no way able to capture the pass, despite trying to attack in squadrons and in every way, they retreated back. |
| In these attacks of the battle, it is said that the king of Persia leapt up from his throne thrice, fearing for his army. |
| At that time they fought in this way, but on the next day the barbarians were faring no better. |
| For since they (the Greeks) were few, they (the Persians) hoped that they (the Greeks) had been covered in wounds and that they (the Greeks) would no longer be able to make war on them. |
| οἱ δὲ Ἕλληνες κατὰ τάξις τε καὶ κατὰ ἔθνεα κεκοσμημένοι ἦσαν, καὶ ἐν μέρεϊ ἕκαστοι ἐμάχοντο, πλὴν Φωκέων· | But the Greeks had been arranged in ranks and nations, and each group was fighting in turn, except the Phocians. |
| And they were drawn up on the mountain guarding the pass. And since the Persians were finding nothing different from what they say on the day before, they retreated. |
